Tot School Week 6: Spring

This week in Tot School, we learned all about the season Spring!  It was a perfect week for it because we were met with some awesome park weather and even surprised with some great spring storms on the weekend, which fully rounded out our lesson and will carry over into our following week: Rain and Rainbows!

We started off day 1 of Spring Week with Nolan's Baby Loves Spring book, which he loves to lift the flaps, so he was super excited to get to read this all time favorite once again.  We also read And Then It's Spring, which taught us about planting a garden and waiting patiently for it to grow over time.  I put together a fun Spring Sensory bin that included some Target $1 bin garden tools, as well as some laminated carrots and garden flowers and bugs (pages found here and here).  Nolan enjoyed burying and "hiding" the printables and then digging them out, one by one, as we identified colors of the flowers and names of the bugs.

We had to cut our activities short this day, but we ended with a contact paper flower, where Nolan created his own flower petals and put them on each of the petals of the contact paper flower (assimulated the idea from this).  I simply cut my own flower pattern from construction paper, taped to the window, and covered with a sheet of contact paper for him to enjoy the stickiness.  The petals were shred up tissue paper that worked nicely for another activity later in the week.

I had Nolan create his own flowers at first, and then I had him organize them by color on each petal.  He liked to stop to "smell" each flower petal before putting them on, too!  Silly boy.

Day 2, we enjoyed the book, In the Tall, Tall Grass, and followed a caterpillar through his adventure in the garden and the different things he saw throughout.  We played a caterpillar color sorting game that I came across on Pinterest (found here), where Nolan used the tissue paper colors from Day 1 of Spring Week to cover each corresponding color of the caterpillar's body.  We made it into a fun game where he would run back and forth and I would yell out which color to select from the bin and place on, and then he was able to create his own freestyle on various rounds after.

For our arts/craft project of the day, we made our very own caterpillar out of pom poms and a clothespin.  Nolan was able to glue the clothespin independently and then I assisted him with sticking the pom poms down since they didn't want to stick that well, initially.  At the end, we met a fuzzy little caterpillar friend that Nolan gave hugs and kisses to!

We spent some time outside enjoying a nature hunt, where Nolan was able to pick freely any item he wanted in the backyard that related to nature, such as flowers, leaves, and even some weeds!  Haha!  Afterwards, we went back inside and created a Sticky Garden (idea found here) where Nolan simply took his items from outside and created his own masterpiece by placing it on contact paper.  He absolutely loved this activity and was super proud to show Dad when he came home from work!  We left it up for a couple of days because it looked pretty cool and he was so happy and proud over it!

To end out our lesson for the day, we ended up at the park, and since it was pretty windy, we tried out our new kite that Grandma had given him for Easter.  Although the wind was pretty strong, the kite didn't want to go too high, even when I flew it, but that didn't stop Nolan from thinking it was the coolest and funniest thing ever!  He had a blast running around with it and even just simply standing with it held out in front of him, watching the wind blow it gently in the air!

On our last day of Spring Week, we read all about ladybugs and counted them by fives in the book, Lots of Ladybugs!  I found these great printable ladybugs from the Fun With Mama blog and we placed and counted the spots on one for our table time activity.  I wanted to use velcro on the laminated pages to stick the spots on so we could reuse them over and over again, but once I realized I had run out, I had to resort to using Command strips instead.  It worked, but definitely wasn't easy getting them off so I wouldn't recommend it!

I printed the same ladybug template and shrank them down in size, and wrote our own numbers and corresponding spots on them.  We played a game similar to the "High 5" game that Nolan was crazy about during Colors week, except this time, I shouted out the number he was to "slap" and once he found it, he had to point and count off the number of spots on the same ladybug.  He loved it!

Finally, for our arts/craft project of the day, we used our awesome Fingerprint Activities book to make our own ladybugs!  I helped draw the lines with a Sharpie, but Nolan had other plans and wanted to do it himself, so I let him and he made his mark, quite literally!  I absolutely love how each of these has turned out that we've done so far, and we always date it to see how he will progress through the months!

To cap off our Spring Week, the weekend gave us some beautiful spring storms, and Nolan enjoyed playing in the sprinkles outside on Saturday morning.  We spent an hour jumping in baby puddles and having a blast wearing his rain jacket and hood!  We don't get much rain here, so when we do, we take advantage of these warmer sprinkle days, and now that Nolan is old enough to enjoy them, too, they make those relaxing weekend storms that much better!

March Happenings

In the beginning of the month, we took advantage of the Bank of America Museums program and checked out the Las Vegas Natural History Museum.  We had never been and didn't have very high expectations, but it was a good way to spend a weekend day!  Nolan really enjoyed seeing all the animals when we first arrived, and thought some of them were "scary" but wasn't actually scared of them.

We moved on to the ocean room where we saw lots of different fish and some big whales!  Next up was by far Nolan's favorite- the dinosaur room.  He loved making the giant T-Rex roar over and over again, and spent a good chunk of time just hanging out watching him.

The children's area was fun, and Nolan enjoyed playing with the different activities they had available.  The bubble viewing area for some tropical fish was really cool, and Nolan liked to call them all "Nemos".  He spent some time in the submarine before we sat down to watch a fun Meet and Greet with some Little Critters!  Nolan was super brave and got to touch a tarantula with Daddy, while Mommy passed on that one. :)   We moved on to check out the animals in the Africa exhibit before spending some time outside playing on the museum's playground, and then heading home for the afternoon.  Although it was a little old and not the most eventful museum, it was still a great way to spend a day!

Harley started out his March by stretching out and relaxing to the max on the couch, just like every morning!

We enjoyed lots of nice weather this month by welcoming Spring and playing outside in the backyard again!  Nolan was extra happy about getting to use his playset again with the warming weather!

Little baby lady has been extra active this month, and I've been trying to capture her crazy movements on camera for weeks.  I finally got one that only shows a fraction of how she moves in my belly... It's like she knows the second I hit record, she goes silent!  She is SO much more active than Nolan was in my belly... which freaks me out, thinking she's going to be a wild one outside the womb!  (28 weeks in video)

Nolan pulled his best Elvis impression while sporting his sunglasses in the car.

We tried a new breakfast joint, The Kitchen Table, and had a yummy breakfast outside on the terrace.  They played music through some outside speakers set up right next to us, and Nolan thought it was the coolest thing to be able to get down and jam it out while waiting for his food and after he ate, too.  He had lots of dancing to do and wasn't shy about it!

After breakfast, we met up with my Mom and got a peek at what Baby #2 looks like in our 3D/4D ultrasound!

Nolan found a sweet new ride at TJ Maxx... and luckily it was broken so it couldn't drive throughout the store.

I've been pigging out on ice cream almost every night while we binge watch VICE on HBO Go for the past 3 weeks straight... and have zero shame about it.

We attended the City of Henderson's St. Patrick's Day parade for the first time and had a great time!  Nolan was super excited to go to a parade and talked about it all morning.  We got there just a bit before it started, and found a spot towards the beginning of the parade across from the carnival.  Nolan got all set up with his snacks and water, chillin' on his blanket and waited for the parade to begin.  When it started, he was really into and focused on the bagpipes and waved Hi! to the big firetruck and firefighters.  The St. Patrick's Day Easter Bunny made an appearance and gave a wave, and Nolan reallllllly wanted to touch the horses that pranced by!

The Star Wars entry was a huge hit with everyone, and Nolan spotted it from SO far away!  He kept repeating Star Wars! Star Wars! but then got a little intimidated as all the Storm Troopers marched by, although he managed to give some serious waves to them.  Another favorite of ours was the Dachshund club that wagged by!  Nolan knew right away that they looked just like his Harley!

Nolan loved getting the candy that they would throw out, and hoarded his stash while sucking down his lollipop.  The fun little cars made their way by, and this guy was having a blast.  Shortly after, Nolan got to high five and dance with this crazy looking guy and thought he was pretty funny.

We didn't realize how long the parade was, so we decided we would cut out early and check out the carnival before heading home for lunch.  Mommy decided to splurge and get some funnel cake, which was actually one of the best funnel cakes we've had!  SO yummy!  Nolan ran around while we found a quiet spot in the grass and chowed down.  We walked around and although we didn't ride any rides, we had a fun morning enjoying the beautiful weather and getting to partake in a fun tradition I hope to be able to attend year after year!

One night after dinner, Nolan randomly lined up all of his stuffed animal friends and then laid down to join them for "nap time".

Before bath time, Nolan totally rocked a man bun to match Mommy's top knot and looked absolutely adorable doing so.

The next morning, Harley actually let Nolan use him as a pillow.

On St. Patrick's Day, we met our friends Jamie and Coen at Krispy Kreme for a fun St. Patty's Day donut date!  The boys enjoyed some festive donuts and then ran around on a sugar high.  We split ways so Nolan could get a haircut and they could run errands, but met back up at the park to play and grab some lunch before our Dancing with Miss Jenny class in the afternoon.

That night for dessert, we enjoyed some Lucky Charms rice krispee treats, which were surprisingly really good!  Nolan thought they were super fun and inhaled his in minutes.  Afterwards, Nolan put in his March Madness picks by choosing his bracket!  These printables were so fun and he actually chose each and every one of his teams to move forward.. mostly based on mascots he preferred and colors!  He picked Oregon for the win... because if you know what the mascot looks like... He's verrrrry similar to Donald Duck, so it only makes sense!

I took a selfie while feeling huge.

We had a little contraction scare which led to a few hours in Labor & Delivery... but all is good, now!

I snagged some daffodils from Trader Joe's because... Spring.

We spent an Easter Egg Hunt at Tivoli Village and had a blast!

Nolan and I took some silly selfies on Snapchat.

We spent the morning at another Egg Hunt from the City of Henderson, and then when we came home for nap time, I caught little Miss rolling around in my belly, all alien-like!

We had a great Easter Day, being spoiled by the Easter Bunny and then enjoying a nice dinner at Grandma's.

I hit 33 weeks in this pregnancy, and scheduled our C-Section date for May 12th as baby girl's birthday- if she decides to stay put that long!

Our Tot School adventures continued and we covered themes like Colors and Shapes, and celebrated St. Patrick's Day and Easter themed weeks, too!

We ended the month by taking it easy around the house and running just a few errands during the week, in hopes to keep the contractions at bay.  Nolan had to sport his awesome new Cookie Monster shoes... because you're only 2 once!

...Until next month!
