We started our week off with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Nolan really enjoyed this classic. We had some fun activities to go along with our themed book for the day, and started with clip matching (cards and printables found here). Nolan has a really tough time with the clips himself still, so I have to help him by holding the card and guiding to where he needs to place it. He knows the match, so I make him point it out to me before pinning, since I know he has a hard time directing it to where he knows it should go.
We then followed with a fun game of feeding the Very Hungry Caterpillar! Nolan adored this and asked multiple times later in the week to play this game again. We used our matching cards, and as he picked which food he wanted to feed the Caterpillar, I had him identify which one matched before feeding into the caterpillar's mouth.
For our corresponding craft, we created a sponge painted Very Hungry Caterpillar. This was a super easy and cute craft and Nolan really enjoyed it. He sponged his own caterpillar after I told him where to place each sponge, and even glued his antennas down himself, too.
On our second day of food, we read the book Eating the Alphabet, which was a super cute ABC book of different foods for each letter. Nolan loved identifying each food and even learned a few new ones. Directly after, we used our matching clip cards as recipe cards, and I would give him a set of recipes to follow, he would find the food, "cookit up" and serve it to us for a meal. He absolutely loved this and it was a creative way to reuse our cards from the day before.
We played a matching game (found here) that was found here, and I cheaped out and tried to use a paper clip as the spinner, but it didn't work very well at all. I put this together so last minute that I didn't have the supplies needed, so we improvised, but it only caused frustration for Nolan when it wouldn't spin properly. Oopsies! Next time, we will use the right supplies so hopefully the interest will last longer.
For our craft, we "spread" some "jelly" on our printable toast with a plastic knife, which worked somewhat decent, but Nolan thought it was pretty cool, so overall it was a win!
On our last day of Food Week, we read, If you Give a Pig a Pancake, which Nolan really enjoyed! He loved the book and had a really fun time playing our balancing game of running back and forth, balancing "pancakes" on the spatula! He did get frustrated and had a tantrum or two in the beginning, but once he got the hang of how to do it, it was all smiles.
Afterwards, we did a sequencing activity for the first time, and Nolan surprised me at how well he understood the activity. We used the book to follow along on each page, and he was able to identify each setting and highlights of the book and place them onto the story sequence circle. I thought he would also get bored of this after the first few, but he finished it out awesomely and we basically reread the book a second time to do the activity, which also surprised me that it kept his interest!
We cut our day short since we had to run errands around town, and we ended up having our last day together as just Nolan and I as a really fun one, between some exciting tot school activities, running errands, and spending time together watching the planes and having a picnic at the park! Baby sister decided to make her grand early entrance the following day, so it will probably be a bit of time before we get back to our Tot School fun!
